Workshops & Skill Development

We have provided training, skill development and complex facilitation across local and state government for 20 years. Jan McGannon, our Projects Director, has a background in secondary teaching as well as a trainer for Victoria Police. We bring our understanding of how to support information sharing into how we present CPTED workshops to staff.

From the beginning, we have a focus on both the issues of crime and the issues of space users (wanted and not wanted). Focusing only on crime and crime prevention (vandalism/graffiti/anti social behaviour/policing) can direct discussion to a negative and ‘fortress type ‘mentality. Those involved in community infrastructure projects need a multi layered and integrated approach to maximising community member use of facilities, because activation does not only happen when you cut the ribbon on opening day – activation and the unspoken ways people assess space need to be integrated into planning from a project’s commencement.

Group CPTED assessments:
One of our workshops includes a group site assessment, where staff from different parts of your organisation get interactive practice at looking at space in terms of how it looks to visitors and regular users. Staff also consider how Councils can have an immediate positive impact on improving a space through small, low cost changes. This approach strengthens whole of Council understanding of the importance of CPTED Components of access control, surveillance (active and passive) as well as territoriality.
