Open spaces

Open spaces can refer to a wide range of space use:  Parks, reserves, precincts, dog parks as well as walking and cycling paths. Community desire for integrated, coordinated and safe open spaces is very strong, and councils are faced with the challenge of maximising functionality, access, linkages, integration and safe ingress and egress.

Different age groups, genders, cultures and levels of ability and movement are all the recipients of Council open spaces, and they all have different needs and expectations about what constitutes a safe place. Creating liveable spaces, with precincts, activity zones and places for rest are essential for supporting community members health and wellbeing needs, social connectedness and opportunities for physical activity.

We have undertaken assessments for local skate parks, major multi sport precincts, stadiums as well as reserves and major parkland areas.

Has your open space project planning included a CPTED assessment that will combine issues of intervention, furniture, lighting and surveillance with an understanding of how different population groups, ages and genders approach spaces that seem safe or unsafe?
